Background checks

Once you have identified an individual you wish to work for you as a personal assistant, you may wish to conduct a criminal or other background check.

Following are some links to Vermont resources that can help you.

Please note that these links will only give you information about acts committed in Vermont.

  • The Adult Abuse Registry is operated by the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living (DAIL). It tracks all individuals who have been found to have abused or exploited a vulnerable adult: whether an elder or an adult with a disability. This link will take you to a site that will direct you to a form that you will need to print out and fill out to request a check of the Adult Abuse Registry. Note that an employer can access the Registry only with the permission of the employee and after you have made an actual offer of employment. This information is free.
  • The Child Abuse Registry is operated by the Vermont Department of Children and Families and includes substantiated cases of child abuse dating from 1992. This link will take you to a site that will direct you to a form you will need to print out and send to DCF. Note that an employer can access the Registry only with the permission of the employee and after you have made an actual offer of employment. This information is free.
  • The Vermont Criminal Information Center is operated by the Vermont Department of Public Safety and has information on all criminal convictions in the state. This link takes you to start of the request process. Anyone may request a background check. There is a cost of $20 per background check.
  • Background checks conducted by the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles cost $10 for records covering the last three years or $16 to cover all records for that driver. The link will take you to the cover page where you will need to click on "TAVG 116 Record Request Form." If you wish, you may fill the form out online and then print it out. You will need permission of the employee to carry out the search.
