1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the union representing PCAs, is the fastest-growing union in the Bay State and the largest union of healthcare workers in Massachusetts. 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East has more than 34,000 members throughout the Commonwealth, delivering quality care in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, clinics, and at home. 

PCAs voted to join 1199SEIU in the fall of 2007 to improve their jobs and the care they provide. Through SEIU, PCAs are joining a national movement of homecare workers to fight for better wages, health benefits, paid time off and improved quality of care for consumers. Working with community organizations, families, consumers and advocates for seniors and people with disabilities, SEIU homecare workers are making significant improvements in homecare across the country.

In 2008, PCAs in Massachusetts negotiated their first union contract which includes 15% raises over 3 years, the first ever paid time off benefit for PCAs and a commitment to work toward providing PCA health insurance.
