Academic & Accessibility Aide
Bridgewater State University — Bridgewater, MA

Pay: $23.00/hour

Hours: 12 hours/week
Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday

Location: Bridgewater State University campus

Seeking a dependable, patient, and detail-oriented academic & accessibility aide to assist a bright, independent college student on the Bridgewater State University campus.
The aide will provide mobility assistance, academic support, and physical assistance with classroom and laboratory tasks so the student can conserve physical energy and fully participate in her college classes while maintaining as much independence as possible.

This is not a personal care position. The goal is to provide practical assistance with tasks that are physically difficult while allowing the student to perform tasks independently whenever she is able.

Schedule
• Monday: 3 hours — morning
• Tuesday: 3 hours — midday
• Wednesday: 3 hours — morning
• Friday: 3 hours — morning
• Exact times will be coordinated around the student's class schedule.
• Schedule may be adjusted as class schedules change between semesters.

Responsibilities

Mobility & Campus Assistance
• Safely push a manual wheelchair between classes and around campus.
• Assist with navigating campus pathways, ramps, elevators, doorways, and other areas as needed.
• Carry and transport all personal and academic items (backpack, laptop, textbooks, supplies, water, coat).
• Provide reliable assistance with transitions between classes while respecting the student's independence.

Academic & Classroom Support
• Unpack and organize books, notebooks, laptop, and other materials before class.
• Pack materials at the end of class.
• Take clear, organized handwritten or typed notes during lectures as needed.
• Type material dictated by the student when physical fatigue makes writing or typing difficult.
• Assist with basic physical aspects of classroom participation when needed.
• Maintain clear, prompt check-ins and notify the family/parent immediately if any issues arise during the day.

Laboratory Support
• Help with physical setup and breakdown of laboratory materials and equipment.
• Assist with opening containers, positioning materials, moving supplies, and other physically demanding tasks.
• Follow the student's instructions and allow her to complete academic tasks herself whenever physically able.
• Help ensure she can participate fully in laboratory activities without unnecessary physical strain.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is:
• Reliable, punctual, and consistent.
• Respectful of personal independence and boundaries.
• Comfortable working one-on-one with a college student.
• Able to safely and comfortably push a manual wheelchair across a university campus.
• Strong in written communication and note-taking.
• Comfortable typing and taking dictated notes.
• Comfortable assisting with basic physical tasks in classroom and laboratory settings.
• Detail-oriented and able to follow instructions.
• Discreet and respectful of student privacy.
• Patient, flexible, and willing to adapt to the student's needs.

Must pass a background check prior to hire.

Important
This position is intended to facilitate access and conserve physical energy, not to take away the student's independence. The student is bright, capable, and independent and will direct the aide regarding what assistance she needs.
